Hogwarts

A Replica 3D Model

Last update: 20th December, 2024

Hogwarts is one of my favourite structures in media, and the complexities of the architecture have made it something I’ve wanted to recreate for as long as I’ve been working in 3D. This will be the 3rd or 4th attempt I’ve made, but it is by far the best.

With the release of the Hogwarts Legacy video game, suddenly I had access to an extremely detailed and well-rounded reference that I could use to work out how everything fit together. Before this, Hogwarts imagery was a bit of a jumbled mess, with the layout changing dramatically from one image to the next (sometimes within the same movie).

So far I have created a rough layout model of the entire castle, and detailed models of about half of it. Every time I finish a high-detail section of the castle, I create the textures for it, so that I’m not stuck with doing all of that at the end. I think that I’ve worked out a good workflow for it, and the techniques I’ve learned in order to model some of the more complex shapes have been wonderful for improving my overall modelling skill.

This project went on hold while I was finishing off the initial release of the Master Compositing in Blender course, but I’m excited to continue with it.
